September Sessions – Tom Peel, 21 September 2011

The third September Session took place last Wednesday, featuring the inimitable Tom Peel. Stripped of his usual reel-to-reel tape backing, Tom delivered an intimate, personal set that was filled with acute humour and emotional honesty.

Stream the session below, or on our Soundcloud page.

The final September Session takes place later, with a performance by Boat to Row. Places may be available – call Ikon to book:

between a Welsh cheese boat and the Neptune Centre.

Bit of a delayed blog post here, but throughout last weekend Slow Boat acted as an on-board sewing site at the Tipton Community Association Festival. Even the intermittent showers of rain didn’t stop out productivity, and now the ceiling of the boat is graced with a vast array of embroidery.

We invited families on board to join us in our weekend of craft activities, and the response to the Aaron Manby itself couldn’t have been better! The boat hails from Tipton, and had been used for youth-inspired activities in the past. It was incredibly interesting to learn about others’ experiences of the Aaron Manby, and to hear so many remarks about how white its current interior is.

And then we took the boat back on the Monday morning:

…which only took 4 hours, we were practically speeding!

September Sessions – E.L. Heath & Rob Dunsford 14 September 2011

The second September Session took place last Wednesday, featuring a performance by Shropshire-based experimental folk musician E.L. Heath. Heath’s music blends traditional folk with contemporary sounds and is inspired by the rugged landscape of his home county and the Welsh wilderness.

Heath was accompanied by singer songwriter Rob Dunsford and Ben Holton (of epic45). Together they performed music from Heath’s album Shropshire Hill Country and a song specially written for the session, ‘Cwch Araf’ (‘Slow Boat), performed in Welsh. The trio also sampled the resonant sounds of the Edgbaston tunnel for an improvised sound piece.

Last Wednesday saw the first September Session take place on board Slow Boat, with performances by local singer-songwriters Timothy Parkes and Poppy Tibbetts. Field recordings of the sessions were made, capturing the interaction of the musicians, the boat and the waterways. Listen out for the steady chug of the engine, shouts of passers-by and passing trains on this journey of sound.
